CTR Underperformers
CTR Underperformers is the title-tag and meta-description triage list. It compares each query that already ranks in the top three positions against your site's own CTR curve for that position and surfaces the queries where the SERP listing is underperforming the benchmark by 30% or more. The ranking work is already done — the only thing standing between you and the missing clicks is the snippet.
What it measures
For every query in the selected window we compute actual CTR and impression-weighted average
position. We then look up the expected CTR for that position bucket in your site's most recent
ctr_curve_90d snapshot, compute the delta, and estimate the missed clicks as
(expected_ctr − actual_ctr) × impressions.
How we filter
- Position 1.0 – 5.999 — page-one positions where CTR is high enough that a snippet rewrite produces meaningful traffic.
- ≥ 50 impressions in the window — statistically meaningful.
- Actual CTR < 70% of your expected CTR for that position — i.e. at least 30% below benchmark.
- The position bucket must have a non-zero expected CTR in your latest curve snapshot (otherwise there's no benchmark to compare against).
How to read each row
- Actual CTR — what the query is currently doing.
- Expected CTR — what your site typically achieves at that position.
- Delta — Actual − Expected, in percentage points. Always negative here.
- Missed Clicks — estimated extra clicks per period if the row caught up to the benchmark. Sort by this column to triage by upside.
What to do with it
- Find the ranking page (Search Console URL Inspection or the Cannibalization view).
- Rewrite the
<title>to lead with the exact query phrasing where natural, and front-load the value proposition. - Rewrite the meta description with a concrete outcome and a soft CTA. Keep ≤ 150 characters.
- Re-request indexing; SERP usually updates within 1–2 weeks.
- Re-check after 2–3 weeks. The Delta column should shrink (less negative).
Caveats & limits
- If your CTR Curve snapshot is stale (e.g. older than 14 days), the expected baseline will lag reality. Re-run the daily ETL.
- Branded queries can show up here when sitelinks dominate; check the query before rewriting.
- SERP-feature interference (AI Overviews, video carousels) can permanently depress CTR — the rewrite won't fix those; route those queries to Striking Distance instead.
