It's a fair question, and it's one we get asked directly. You can connect Google Search Console to Claude or another assistant through an MCP server and ask it about your data. It works. It costs nothing beyond your existing subscription.
We publish an MCP server ourselves, so we're not going to pretend otherwise.
Here's the honest version of what that setup does well, and where it stops.
An AI assistant is an interface. Metricstab is the data layer underneath it.
The assistant is good at answering questions about data you hand it. It is not a warehouse, it is not a monitor, and it can only see what the API returns in the moment you ask.
Search Console keeps a rolling 16-month window. Anything older is gone — from the UI, from the API, and therefore from any assistant querying it. Metricstab backfills 400 days on connection and keeps every day after that in your own warehouse.
In year one this barely matters. In year two you can ask what happened last March, compare this quarter to the same quarter two years ago, and see the full arc of a page's decay. That data cannot be reconstructed later by us, by you, or by anyone else.
This is the difference most people underestimate.
To get value from an assistant, you have to already suspect something. You have to open it, and you have to know what to ask.
Metricstab runs every night whether you think about it or not. When /pricing loses 38% of its clicks in 72 hours and it correlates with a robots.txt edit from Monday afternoon, you get told. Nobody prompted that. Nobody was going to.
We snapshot robots.txt every three hours for the same reason. An assistant will never check your robots.txt at 3am, because you'll never think to ask it to.
The Search Console API applies row limits and privacy filtering. An ad-hoc query returns a slice, not the whole dataset — and the slice changes depending on the dimensions you request.
Metricstab pulls day by day across multiple dimension combinations every night and assembles the full query × page × day grain. Same API, materially more complete data. If you've queried the API yourself, you already know this.
That's fine when you're exploring. It's a problem when you're sending a client a report.
Our numbers are computed deterministically — fixed thresholds, statistical tests, the same logic every run. The model writes the explanation on top of numbers it didn't invent. When you tell a client organic traffic rose 23%, that figure is reproducible next month and defensible in the meeting.
An MCP server can only surface what the API returns. GA4 sessions referred by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot are not in Search Console. Neither is PageSpeed field data, or the join between them.
If you run one website, you're comfortable setting up an MCP server, and you want to poke at your data occasionally rather than track it continuously — an assistant with Search Console access will serve you well. We'd rather say that than sell you a subscription you don't need.
