AI Overviews vs Sessions
The cross-signal report: for pages that appear in Google's AI Overviews, it puts the search side (impressions, clicks) next to the GA4 sessions those pages still earn. The question it answers: "the pages AI Overviews are eating into — are they also losing real visits?"
What it measures
- AI Overview impressions / clicks — from Search Console's AI-Overview search appearance, per page.
- Sessions / Users — GA4 on-site traffic for the same page over the window.
How it's built
We take the pages that show up in AI Overviews (the same source behind your
AI Overviews reports) and join them to
GA4 sessions on the canonical page path. So search visibility and on-site outcome line up
on one row per page.
How to read it
- AI impressions up, sessions down — AI Overviews may be answering the query in place; the click is being absorbed. These are your at-risk pages.
- AI impressions up, sessions steady — you're being cited and still earning the visit. Study what makes these pages click-worthy.
Caveats
- Requires both a connected GA4 property and AI-Overview search-appearance data in Search Console.
- AI Overviews rollout is uneven by query and region — read trends, not single days.
